GHD has been appointed by the South Australian Government as Technical Advisor for the Northern Water project, a 260ML/day seawater desalination plant in the Spencer Gulf, South Australia.

A priority initiative with national significance, the desalination plant will be the second-largest in South Australia and will be connected to the north of the state via a ~600km pipeline.

The new infrastructure aims to help industry reduce its reliance on the Great Artesian Basin and the River Murray – water sources that support significant environmental and cultural values – while enabling the growth of industries crucial to achieving net-zero goals, including copper mining, green energy and hydrogen. It will help overcome delays in existing mining production resulting from a lack of ready access to water of sufficient quality.

The project is also expected to encourage significant economic growth in the north of the state, including around 4,200 new jobs across the Far North, Upper Spencer Gulf and Eyre Peninsula regions. It is expected to generate flow-on benefits to the local and state economies by around $5.2 billion GSP annually.

As Technical Advisor, GHD is expected to provide multidisciplinary services including developing specifications, evaluating designs and oversight for early and enabling works, as well as construction and commissioning support.

Working on Northern Water is a privileged opportunity for us to continue as a state government trusted advisor, providing engineering and technical support services for this landmark, nation-building project.

Working closely with our client, we are delighted to be contributing to lasting community benefit through the development and growth of green energy and hydrogen industries in South Australia, as well as economic growth, especially in the north of the state."

Neil Tooley, Business Group Leader – Water, GHD

Northern Water is the largest water infrastructure project in regional Australia and includes marine works, a desalination plant and a significant trunk pipeline network, with associated balancing storages and transfer pumping stations.

When complete, Northern Water is expected to provide a climate independent water source to users including mining, pastoral, defence and other emerging industries in the north of the state, while also providing the opportunity to supply water to SA Water and its customers.
