At a glance

RIM Architects, now part of GHD, converted an existing 1,800-square-foot coffee house into Table 35, a sophisticated wine bar and restaurant in Tamuning, Guam. We delivered full architectural and interior design services while navigating unique island constraints and maintaining strict budget controls.

The challenge

Creating a trendy dining destination on Guam presented unique challenges due to the island's remote location and limited resources. The former coffee shop required extensive upgrades to transform into a full-service restaurant, with aging mechanical and electrical systems needing complete modernization. The compact 1,800-square-foot space demanded innovative solutions to accommodate 70 seats, an exhibition kitchen and wine display system. Additionally, the fast-track timeline and tight budget added complexity, requiring meticulous planning and resourceful use of locally sourced materials.

Our response

We approached this renovation with a focus on maximizing the space while creating an elevated dining experience. Our design team developed strategic solutions including custom millwork and versatile seating arrangements to optimize the compact footprint. We integrated an exhibition kitchen that serves as both a functional workspace and engaging visual element. The custom wine display system became a defining architectural feature while efficiently storing inventory. Working closely with local suppliers and contractors, we sourced materials that met both aesthetic and durability requirements while staying within budget constraints. Our comprehensive services included mechanical and electrical coordination, construction documentation and permitting support.

The impact

Table 35 impacted Guam's dining landscape by introducing a sophisticated yet welcoming venue that served both residents and visitors. The project demonstrated how thoughtful design can overcome space and resource limitations to create exceptional hospitality experiences. By successfully delivering this project on time and within budget, we established a new standard for restaurant design that enhanced the client’s menu and style. The venue’s continued success validates our innovative approach to balancing operational requirements with aesthetic goals while working within island constraints.
