At a glance

Sorted Logistics sought to create an expansive warehouse that could efficiently house its logistics operation with a focus on providing a large, clear-span space for racking.

The challenge

Sorted Logistics’ warehousing, transportation and supply chain business was thriving and needed new, purpose-built facilities to allow its services to expand. It identified the need to develop a cost-effective design for the major components of the upgraded building within a compressed timeframe, drawing on previous design and details from earlier development stages in which we were involved in.

Our response

We offered comprehensive services encompassing structural, architectural, civil, geotechnical, and planning aspects to craft a distinctive building layout that maximises the 56,255 m2 site and optimises product flow. Our thorough and collaborative approach to the design phase allowed us to identify the most cost-effective and efficient solution for Sorted Logistics. By working closely with the contractor through optioneering and cost iterations, the final design was buildable. The first build was a success, and as a result, we were contracted to apply this design to four additional warehouses.

The building features an efficient structural design that minimises resource use where possible. We utilised steel portal frames, lightweight cladding, roofing and pre-cast concrete panels at a low level, so that the budget remained intact. The absence of columns offers Sorted Logistics flexibility to rework the space as needed. We also incorporated goods loading and unloading into the design.

The site layout was specifically developed to suit the logistics operations of this project. Given the high volume of vehicles moving in and out of the site, safety was paramount.

We designed a one-way system that circled the four buildings, reducing safety risks and distractions for staff.

The impact

The new building’s appearance harmonises with the existing designs, boasting a high-quality finish that elevates the space and presents an opportunity for Sorted Logistics to expand its business. This expansion has enabled Sorted Logistics to provide over 100 new job opportunities and secured several new, long-term clients, cementing its position as a leading player in the logistics industry.
